The owner of a GE refrigerator won’t miss it if the freezer has stopped working. There is no chance to keep the food frozen when there is a breakdown. Now, it is necessary to investigate the case and clarify what part is defective. Mostly, when the freezer isn’t working, it is necessary to check the defrost thermostat first of all. The defrost thermostat, a bi-metallic switch, controls the temperature rise in the freezer compartment during the defrost cycle. Once the temperature reaches a preset level, the defrost thermostat opens, shutting off electric current to the defroster heating elements, much as your home's heating thermostat shuts down the furnace once the home reaches the preset room temperature. A malfunctioning thermostat can keep the defrost heating elements from turning on or keep them on too long, causing heat damage or even a fire. Then, check the drain line. It is necessary to clean it in case of blockage. Over time, dust and dirt can accumulate on the condenser coils, blocking proper airflow and reducing the cooling capacity of your freezer. Clean the condenser coils every few months to help ensure your appliance is performing optimally. To clean the condenser coils, unplug the appliance. Depending on the model of your fridge or freezer, the coils may be located on the back of the appliance or near the bottom at the front. For rear coils, move the appliance away from the wall until you are safely and comfortably able to access them. For front coils, unsnap the base grille that covers the coils. Give the coils a thorough cleaning using a refrigerator coil brush or a vacuum hose with a soft brush head. Replace the grille, reposition the appliance, and plug it back in. Use only original GE parts to make sure your appliance works as effectively as possible.
