Users often complain that their Kenmore refrigerator makes ice intermittently, once in three days. Surely, that doesn’t sound convenient and needs a repair. The door switch can stop the icemaker from working. If you have a light in the freezer check to make sure the light will turn on and off each time you press the door switch. Open the door and press the door switch by hand repeatedly to make sure it works. Also make sure the switch is being pressed well by the door. A dirty compressor (the coils) could cause the ice maker to act erratically. Try cleaning the coils, and your Kenmore refrigerator should start working normally in 48 hours (otherwise you will have to replace the ice maker). If the unit doesn't start dropping ice over one night, and the bin won’t be full, continue tracking the origins of the problem. The only thing that is notorious for intermittent work is the motor/modular but that doesn’t mean anything. Typically if the motor/modular is giving this type of trouble the gear on the front of the modular will be loose. You may be able to easily pull it off (which would be a dead give away) or the little clip that is in the center of the gear will break. Regular refrigerator maintenance is important to get good operation from your appliance and extend its lifespan. You should set up a weekly and monthly maintenance schedule. Preventative care, even in small amounts, will help save on expensive repairs or even a refrigerator replacement later on.
