What could be worse than undercooked dishes? Unfortunately, this dramatic scenario is possible to happen if you have been using your KitchenAid oven for years. You will need to find a malfunctioning element (or a couple of them) and replace. Before fixing the fridge, make sure you allow your oven enough time to fully pre-heat before cooking and conduct a “biscuit test.” If baking a can of ready-made biscuits at the specified temperature displays uneven cooking or longer bake times, your thermostat may need recalibration. To determine if the igniter is defective, turn the oven on and watch as it glows to light the gas. If it takes more than 90 seconds to light or doesn’t glow at all, the igniter is defective and needs replacement. Still, the baking element also requires a check. Electric ovens are heated via a metal coil at the base of the oven. When the wires inside this coil receive electrical current the coil heats up to cook food. A properly functioning coil will have positive continuity and display a uniform red glow when the oven is operating. If the heating element in your oven is defective it may display signs of visible damage like blistering or breakage. It may also display an interrupted red glow or not glow at all. Lastly, if you test the coil with a multimeter it may exhibit negative continuity. In any of these cases, the bake element needs to be replaced.
