When your refrigerator is not cooling properly, the first thing you can do before contacting a technician is resetting it. Resetting your refrigerator is easy. Unplug it (or turn off power at the circuit breaker), wait some time for the electrical charge to clear out of it (usually 1 to 5 minutes at most), and then power it up again. That's it. That's all it takes to reset. If you have a Family Hub refrigerator and just need to reset the screen, you can use the red switch at the top of the inside of the right door of the fridge compartment, behind a removable panel. If you want to perform a factory reset on the Family Hub, you can do so from the settings menu. In fact, if your refrigerator is alarming you with an error code, don’t be too quick to reset the appliance. Error codes on a refrigerator usually signify that your refrigerator is starting to break down and needs service. Although you may be successful in clearing the code away, you're not treating the underlying condition. It's very likely the code will come back. And left untreated, most issues on a refrigerator will get worse over time, resulting in a more costly repair than if it had been addressed right away. As a rule, when the owner ignores the problem or refuses to arrange a maintenance visit, there is a necessity to replace several parts, not one as it could be. Most likely, your not cooling refrigerator will need to replace a heating element, defrost evaporator and install a kit for a drain line. The defrost mechanism in a refrigerator heats the cooling element (evaporator coil) for a short period of time and melts the frost that has formed on it. The resulting water drains through a duct at the back of the unit. Defrost heaters are commonly located beneath a refrigerator's evaporator coils. The evaporator fan motor is usually found at the back of the freezer or fridge compartment behind 1 or more panels. If the motor isn’t running at all, use a multimeter to test the motor windings for continuity. Plug the fridge in. If the windings do not have continuity, you may have to replace the evaporator fan motor entirely.
