This post is devoted to the homeowners who never take care of their appliances and avoid proper maintenance and cleaning. If you can’t remember the last time you cleaned your GE dryer, prepare to face such breakdown as noise or even a total failure. When the dryer is not working and making weird sounds, it is time to run a full diagnostic. Let’s have a look at the parts which might be guilty in this scenario. The bearings turn the pulleys attached to the motor and the drum via a belt that connects them, which receives power from the dryer motor when engaged. Dryer bearings in the drum and motor are lubricated and sealed when first installed, but dry and wear out with time and use. That is why it is not able to work smoothly and becomes noisy. The dryer pulley, commonly called the idler pulley, keeps the dryer drive belt under tension as the belt wraps around the dryer drum. The pulley wheel has a central axle that runs through a bearing, usually a sleeve bearing but on higher-end models, a roller bearing may be used. Check to see if it is not defective. The dryer drive belt turns the dryer drum when the drive motor turns. If the drive belt breaks, the motor runs, but the drum won't move. You can easily check whether the drive belt is broken by lifting the top and inspecting the belt. Replace a damaged or broken drive belt with the manufacturer-approved dryer part. If your dryer shaft is damaged and you can not turn the timer anymore, you will probably have to replace your dryer timer knob. Many dryers allow you to turn the timer knob either way. Whether you turn it clockwise or counterclockwise, you will eventually get to the setting that you want to get to. The plastic can become brittle with age and crack where it attaches to the timer shaft. Remember that replacing parts on appliances can have multiple steps where not all machines are the same. Please use caution and common sense when performing these repairs yourself. As you see your GE dryer will work properly in case of regular maintenance. If you already have problems with your appliance, do not risk its life and call a professional technician.
