The issue with a knob often takes place when kids enjoy helping their parents with washing. Constant turning the knob leads to loss of resilience of mechanism and damage. In fact, the problem is not crucial and your washer will continue working. But we highly recommend eliminating the issue as soon as you’ve noticed it. If the knob does not move the outer ring to set the cycle and you have tried it in every position possible the knob replacement will be needed. Most knobs are plastic that are fitted onto the shaft of the actual switch, which usually has a flat spot on one side to keep the knob indexed correctly. 9 times out of 10 the part of the plastic knob that goes on the shaft will break so that it won’t grip tight enough to turn. It might be better to just get a new knob because plastics degrade over time with heat and exposure to detergents/mechanical stress. If you pull the knob off, (check it’s not a side screw type first) you will probably see a circular hole, with what is supposed to be a flat section inside. The spindle will look like a round bar with a flat side filed into it. Inside the knob, sometimes there is a small metal plate pressed into it, to form the flat to mate up to the spindle. When your child forced the knob, either the centre boss fractured or the metal plate got mangled. If you can take the knob off the machine to expose the shaft and grip it with a pair of pliers or something to turn it you’d be able to tell which part is broken. When you turn the shaft if the cycles change then the switch itself is still good and you just need a knob. If the shaft turns and the cycles don’t change then the switch itself is broken and needs to be replaced.Unfortunately, there might be a need to replace a complete timer. If the washer stops mid cycle the timer might be defective. This part is often misdiagnosed, check other components before replacing this timer. If you do meet a dead end, however, don’t stress. Talk with a support crew and arrange a repair service visit.
