Be sure when your Whirlpool refrigerator (or any other brand) has issues with proper cooling, you will have to check how the thermostat works. The thermostat clips onto the evaporator. If the refrigerator does not defrost both the thermostat and heater can be tested to determine which part is at fault. To replace the temperature control thermostat in your refrigerator first remove any shelving as necessary. Next, remove the screw to release the conduit cover. Remove the screw securing the damper cover and pull the cover off. Pull the thermostat sensor off of the damper. Remove the screws securing the control panel. Pull the control panel forward to release. You can detach the grounding wire and the crisper light wire connecter for better access. Now, remove the screws securing the control component bracket. Pull the knobs off both the control thermostat and the freezer control then pull the bracket free. Disconnect the wires from the control thermostat. Unhook the sensor from the retainer and remove the control component bracket. Remove the screws to release the old control thermostat from the bracket. You’re now ready to install the new temperature control thermostat. Prepare the new thermostat for installation by transferring the insulating sleeve from the old sensor to the new one. Now position the new thermostat on the bracket and replace the screws to secure. Reposition the bracket in the control panel and attach the wires to the new thermostat. Secure the sensor in the retainer. Replace the screws to secure the bracket. Replace both the control thermostat and freezer control knobs. Align the slot in the damper control arm with the freezer control cam then replace the screw to secure the arm. Reconnect the crisper light wire connecter and reattach the grounding wire to the heat shield. Align the control panel on the mounting tabs and push it into place. Replace the screws to secure. Align the thermostat sensor with the air vent on the damper assembly and snap the sensor under the tabs. Reposition the damper cover and secure it with the screw. Reposition the conduit cover and reinstall the screw to secure. Plug the power cord back in and confirm that the refrigerator is functioning properly. Anyway, we don’t recommend DIY as unauthorized service won’t be covered by warranty.
